Marketing at its best
WiFi equipment comes with all sorts of antennas, from tiny ones to pretty big ones which supposedly give a better signal power. But what’s the actual difference between them? Just the shape and size of the plastic case! (this is about antennas included with most of the wireless equipment, not the extended range ones). Proof below:
From left to right: antennas from Linksys WRT54GL, from Asus WL-500GP, from a cheap PCI card and an AA battery (5 cm / 2 inch lenght) as a size scale.

There’s more to the plastic case than just plastic. It is lined on the inside with metal in most cases.
I completely agree with you. I bought an “extended range” antenna from radio shack and as it started to peel apart I saw that it was identical to the previous one I had broken…
Nice.
good work on finding that out. never occured to me before to check actual antenna size.
“Marketing at it’s best”
Or, when expanding “it’s”:
“Marketing at it is best”.
“WiFi equipment comes with al sorts of antennas”
Who’s “al”?
It should be “its’ in the heading, not “it’s”. “It’s” is short for “it is.” You don’t mean “marketing at it is best,” I don’t think.

Gotta love it! Ways to save every penny! Ill still stick to Asus motherboards tho… Funny nonetheless.
It looks like the Asus intends to lie more than the others, but good to know non-the-less.
…and you’re sure the plastic housings don’t have any conductive material in the antenna tips that would touch the metal on the antenna and extend its range?
did you cut the plastic housings open to find out?
Spelling error: “WiFi equipment comes with al sorts” should be “WiFi equipment comes with all sorts”.
*OWNED*
and how come the signal straight is more powerfull
OMFG! They are all the same size! HOLY CRAP!
FIRST!
YHBSU (You have been Stumbled Upon)
Not News! That’s y i own a wrtg54 improved with a Wi-Fi sail
Also, if you want you can replace with a bigger one yourself, it’s not that hard. The way i see it is more about placement than about the size of the antenna. You are 100% Right …. we get lied to on a daily basis.
Tip: if you are going to buy Digital equipment, call someone that knows about it or you will end up paying $1500 for a pink Vaio that goes only as fast as my 4 year old Compaq on XP
(And yes i know about Linux, I run BSD on my main one but i like my laptop that way thx)
Thx for the graphical comparison
Wow! I’ve been out of town and offline for a while and now I see a BIG traffic burst from Stumble Upon.
@D14BL0, deez It’s just plastic.
